Who are you without the uniform?
Coaching for first responders — current and former — from someone who spent twelve years on the line and had to answer that question the hard way.

The problem nobody trains you for
The job issues you five things on day one: a uniform, a badge, a brotherhood, an identity, and daily proof that you matter.
Nobody tells you that when you leave — retirement, injury, burnout, or you're just ready to move on — you hand all five back at once. There's no academy for what comes after.
So you end up fine on paper and lost in practice. Restless. Numbing the quiet. Wondering why civilian life feels like a demotion. Wondering why the people who love you can't reach you.
I'm not describing a hypothetical. I'm describing my own experience.
Why Me
I joined the fire service when I was 20 years old. In my 12 year career I stacked up a lot of certs: firefighter, paramedic, SWAT medic, public safety diver, swift water technician, fire instructor, and mentor. I wore all of these titles like a shiny suit of armor built to keep the real world out.
For most of my career I spent my off days working at 2 other part time departments. I was a fireman's fireman. I was also drinking too much, sexually compulsive, had anger issues, and was always looking for new ways to numb myself. If I was always on the job, then I never had to find out who I was without the uniform.
By the tail end of my career I had become burnt out, bitter and disenchanted with the very job that I had once been so proud to call my vocation. My least favorite words were "Thank you for your service."
When I left the fire service in 2023, I felt lost, alone, and I had to build a new identity from scratch. This program is that work, turned into a process.
The Program
The Stupid Gap is my 12-week, 1:1 coaching program. The stupid gap is the space between the life you have and the life you actually want. You spent a career running toward the thing everyone else runs from. It's time to face the thing you fear the most – yourself.
Over 12 weeks we'll name the armor (your SHIELD — the Self-Held Identity, Ego & Life Design you built to survive), practice a structured method of self-inquiry (PEACE) to find what you actually want your next chapter to be, and then build the bridge to it with a concrete plan (GAP — Goals, Actions, Plan).
The outcome: purpose that doesn't need you to be in uniform. Named values. A mission you chose. A plan you're actually running. Present in your own life instead of pacing the edges of it.
What this is — and what it is not
I'm not a therapist, and this is not treatment. Coaching is forward-looking: identity, purpose, and a plan for what's next. If you're carrying acute trauma or PTSD, that deserves a licensed clinician — full stop, no shame in it, and I'll help you find the right door. Start with your department's peer support team, a chaplain, or a therapist.
If you're in crisis right now, call or text 988. This page will still be here after.
Coaching can run alongside therapy. It doesn't replace it.
Common Questions
I'm still on the job. Is this for me? Yes — arguably the best time to figure out who you are without the uniform is before you have to.
Do you only work with first responders? No. First responders are who I was. They're not the only people I work with — but if you wore the uniform, you won't have to explain yourself to me.
Is this therapy? No. See above — and I mean it about the referral. I am not equipped to provide the same thing a therapist or counselor would.
